Attic insulation in Gatineau and Ottawa
An attic should be understood before insulation is added. Isolation Mael Construction considers your situation, existing insulation and air-leakage concerns before recommending work suited to the building.
When should you have your attic assessed?
Uneven comfort upstairs
Rooms that feel colder or warmer can justify an assessment. The symptom alone does not establish its cause.
Uneven or displaced insulation
The visible condition, coverage and hard-to-reach areas help identify what needs further attention.
Renovation or upgrades
Work in the attic is an opportunity to review the building’s needs before deciding on materials and scope.
What to check before adding insulation
Insulation thickness is only part of the picture. An assessment considers accessible conditions and the questions that must be resolved before work is recommended.
- The type, condition and distribution of existing insulation.
- Possible air paths between heated rooms and the attic, including the hatch and ceiling penetrations.
- Signs of moisture and ventilation conditions that need consideration.
- Access, equipment and precautions specific to the building.
If a suspect material or unusual condition is observed, the appropriate checks and arrangements are clarified before the affected work proceeds. This does not automatically mean abandoning the project.
Cellulose or fibreglass: a building-specific choice
Blown fibreglass
A loose-fill insulation option for accessible attic areas. Suitability depends on the assembly and observed conditions.
Blown cellulose
Another loose-fill option to consider according to the project, building characteristics and manufacturer’s specifications.
Air sealing and ventilation
Insulation does not replace appropriate air-leakage treatment or consideration of ventilation. These elements must be considered together.
The material, thickness and preparation are determined after assessment. A symptom alone is not a reason to prescribe a particular product.
Does the old insulation have to be removed?
Not automatically. Whether it can remain depends on its condition, the materials present and the required preparation. Age alone is not enough to justify removal.
The chosen work and its limits are explained before the job. Area, access, preparation, possible removal and the extent of air sealing can all affect the estimate.
Potential rebates for your attic insulation
Programs depend on your building’s province, regardless of your language. Check the requirements before planning the work.
LogisVert — $1,500
For roof insulation combined with caulking in an eligible, primarily electrically heated home. The entire roof must reach at least R-50, and caulking must address the leakage areas required by the program. Attic insulation alone or caulking alone is insufficient. The homeowner applies to Hydro-Québec.
Rénoclimat — up to $2,000
For roof insulation in an eligible house, depending on area, performance and the new pathway’s criteria effective October 1, 2026. A pre-work energy assessment is optional but recommended. Work must be carried out by an appropriately licensed contractor; invoices and a signed compliance attestation are required.
Home Renovation Savings — up to $1,500
For attic insulation through the energy assessment pathway. Arrange the initial assessment with an approved service organization before any work starts, then complete at least two qualifying upgrades and the final assessment. Home, heating and work requirements apply. The amount depends on starting and final insulation levels and area treated.
Ontario: confirm deadlines before committing
The terms reviewed require the final assessment within 180 days of the initial assessment or by December 31, 2026, whichever comes first. Its booking must be entered in the program’s system by November 30, 2026. Confirm these dates and your project’s timeline with the service organization before work starts.
Already participating in Rénoclimat? Your file may follow the former rules, with a post-work assessment by March 31, 2027. Confirm your file’s rules with the program.
Isolation Maël Construction reviews the work and prepares an estimate; this does not replace a program energy assessment. Maël does not represent any program and guarantees neither eligibility nor payment. Check combination rules before relying on multiple rebates for the same work.
Official sources checked October 27, 2026. The terms in effect for your application apply.
