Caulking and air sealing in Gatineau and Ottawa

Around openings
Window, exterior-door and patio-door junctions are among the areas to consider, depending on accessible conditions.
In the attic
The attic hatch and ceiling penetrations can create air paths between the home and attic.
At building junctions
Service penetrations and certain envelope junctions may also need attention.
Air sealing and insulation have complementary roles
Insulation limits heat transfer through the assembly. Air sealing addresses unwanted air movement. Adding insulation does not automatically deal with air leaks.
A cold room can also be influenced by heating, windows, ventilation or other conditions. An assessment helps distinguish what is observed from causes that still need confirmation.

The substrate, expected movement and exposure inform product selection and preparation.
Compatible membranes and tapes
Some junctions require continuity of the air-sealing system using compatible products.
Products for penetrations
Treatment depends on the type of penetration and assembly requirements. No universal product suits every situation.
Materials are specified according to the project. Product choice must respect safety requirements and manufacturer instructions.
Consider ventilation and define the scope
Improving airtightness does not mean indiscriminately blocking every opening. Required air supplies, ventilation devices and equipment requirements must be considered.
Surface preparation, joint condition, access and the extent of the selected areas affect the work and its estimate. A targeted repair differs from broader envelope treatment.

Potential rebates for caulking and air sealing
Programs depend on your building’s province, regardless of your language. Check the requirements before planning the work.
LogisVert — $1,500
For roof insulation combined with caulking in an eligible, primarily electrically heated home. The entire roof must reach at least R-50, and caulking must address the leakage areas required by the program. Attic insulation alone or caulking alone is insufficient. The homeowner applies to Hydro-Québec.
Home Renovation Savings — up to $250
For air sealing through the energy assessment pathway. Arrange the initial assessment with an approved service organization before any work starts, then complete at least two qualifying upgrades and the final assessment. Home, heating and work requirements apply. The rebate depends on a measured airtightness target; purchasing caulking alone is insufficient.
The new Rénoclimat pathway does not list a standalone rebate for caulking alone. For an existing file, check the former rules directly with the program.
Ontario: confirm deadlines before committing
The terms reviewed require the final assessment within 180 days of the initial assessment or by December 31, 2026, whichever comes first. Its booking must be entered in the program’s system by November 30, 2026. Confirm these dates and your project’s timeline with the service organization before work starts.
